The HEMA-Cast

HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts and is an activity practiced by thousands across the country and around the world. The HEMA-Cast is a podcast focused on the topics and events important to the HEMA community. By going to events and interviewing members of HEMA, we get to exchange ideas and get to know the HEMA community at large.

We're featuring interviews from Swordsquatch 2018 from both ends of the experience spectrum. Cody Schuler is a newer fencer, and Sven Lugar has decades of experience.

Sven Lugar is a sword jock in the pacific northwest and regular volunteer for SwordSquatch. He has 60 years of experience between the Ravens, Military service, the SCA, and HEMA. We're finishing up Study in Steel 2018 and a one off interview from Give a Girl a Sword, hosted by Men at Arms Martial Arts.

Broderick Stocks is a member of Warriors of Ash. You can find Warriors of Ash online at WarriorsofAsh.com. Broderick is still studying and practicing HEMA, and podiumed for the first time at Queen's Gambit with 3rd place in side sword cutting.

 

James Reed is the founder and Lead Instructor of Men at Arms Martial Arts in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. You can find more information about Men at Arms on Facebook, or on their website PASwordCombat.com. Men at Arms is hosting their second annual tournament event “Clash of Claymores” in April. There they are having four tournaments and over a dozen workshops as part of the Longpoint Historical Fencing League. Give a Girl a Sword is an initiative started by Esfinges to encourage events intended to make it easier and more welcoming for women to join and get involved in HEMA. You can find more information about Esfinges on facebook, or their website, esfinges.net. The Esfinges (The Sphinxes) was born out of a need to assist women wanting to begin study of these arts so they can start practicing Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) and to bring female practitioners HEMA together.

I'm done moving and back to putting together episodes from the back log of interviews. Today's interviews are from Study in Steel 2018. We have Daniel León and Rebecca Glass.

Rebecca Glass is a longtime student of HEMA and will be joining L'Arte Della Bellica as we start a new club in New York City in the coming months. She is teaching a class at Black Wolf Historical Fencing called "From Worrier to Warrior" February 23rd. As part of the class, they will look at goal setting and coping strategies that can help you get through competition -- and help you in your daily life outside of HEMA.
