*THIS IS NOT A HEMA-CAST EPISODE*

This is a pilot episode for a potential new Podcast from Firefly Bookstore. Matthew Williams is co-owner of Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown Pennsylvania. He regularly puts on events in Kutztown with local authors, and is a close personal friend of mine. He and I have spoken about doing Community Radio many times in the past and he is at least a part of why I started the podcast in the first place. So while this is not a HEMA-Cast episode, I wanted to share it and get some feedback from my listeners, and give an opportunity for Matt to share this pilot episode with his listeners. Please give us some feed back and let us know what you'd like to hear from a Community Bookstore Podcast. You can contact me at HEMAPodcast@gmail.com or Matt at contactus@fireflybookstore.com You can find us both on Facebook. We want to hear some feedback and I hope that we can get some ideas and put together another great podcast for you to listen to.

The intro, Midtro, and Outro are off of the Kutztown Music Sampler by Keith Brintzenhoff. For more information visit www. Toadcreekmusic.com or e-mail Keith@hometownu.com

The Spirit of HEMA is all about the camaraderie between fighters, the growth in the community, and the go get it done attitude that makes HEMA special. Josh Furrate, Connor Richardson, and Ashanti Ziths exemplify this spirit, without even trying. It was a pleasure to share their stories.

Josh Furrate is a member of Ordo Pricinctus out of Baton Rouge, LA. They host the Baton Rouge Open, a part of SHFL, the Southern Historical Fencing League. Wrestling and Grappling, or as it can be called in a historical context Ringen (German sources) or Abrazare (Italian Sources), are an integral part of Historical combat. And there are many great books and articles that you can find to support this idea. So in that spirit, we spoke with Tim Hall of CKDF and Douglas Perritt of VAF all about Ringen.

Tim Hall is with CKDF and a cofounder of the US Historical Ringen Association. Tim is also a certified personal fitness trainer. Tim is a great Ringen teacher, and competitor. You can find information about CKDF at https://www.capitalkdf.org/. And you can find more information about the US HRA at https://usringen.org/ or on their Facebook Page

Douglas Perritt is with the Virginia Academy of Fencing, and organizer of the Midatlantic Ringen Symposium (MARS) and the Atlantic Ringen Exposition and Symposium (ARES). You can find more information about VAF at http://www.vafinc.com/ You can find last years events on Facebook MARS 2017 and ARES 2017, and I'm sure this years events will be announced soon.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. The podcast is not abandoned, I've just been busy. More episodes are coming, don't worry!

Nov 22, 2017

I have made many friends in HEMA, but today's episode features 3 friends that I made fairly early on in my HEMA Career. John Morahn, Greg Fasolino, and Nick Murro are three people that I respect and admire, and because of that, I wanted to interview them and share their stories with the rest of the HEMA community.

John Morahn is an instructor with Western Swordsmanship Technique and Research (WSTR) out of Willimantic, CT. At IGX 2016 and 2017 he taught Mair's Scythe, a non traditional Western Martial Arts weapon.

You can find more information about WSTR at https://sites.google.com/site/wstrinfo/. You can find John Morahn on Facebook and Twitter.

Greg Fasolino is a member of the Long Island Historical Fencing Society on Long Island New York. He was among the first tournament fights I ever had at IGX 2015. I got to interview him about being a Wisdom League fighter at IGX 2016.

You can find more information about Long Island Historical Fencing at http://www.longislandlongsword.com. Where they also have information about Long Island Point, part of the LHFL.

Nick Murro is the instructor for MEMAG Crossing Fight School. Nick reached out to my club shortly after we were established and has always helped us to be as technical and good sword fighters as we could be. He was my paired technique partner at Longpoint 2017, and we got to sit down and talk about what it's like to be instructors for HEMA.

You can find more information about MEMAG Crossing Fight School at http://www.memag.net/crossingfight.html

Jayson Barrons is the president of the HEMA Alliance. The HEMA Alliance (HEMAA) is a service organization for the Historical European Martial Arts community. It is incorporated as an educational non-profit in order to provide a wide range of services from a stable core whose educational mission is legally bound by open bylaws and democracy. Jayson talked about some of the goals and the projects that the HEMAA is working on and how members can get involved.

You can find out more about the HEMAA at http://www.hemaalliance.com/

Jake Norwood is a founder of CKDF and Longpoint. He occasionally runs a combat stress class at various events he attends. This class is designed to help fighters get more comfortable in a stressful situation, like competition, or a fight. We got a chance to talk about what you can do on your own, or in your own group, to get used to fighting at high intensity.

Capital Kunst des Fechtens can be found at http://www.capitalkdf.org/

More information about Longpoint, including the Longpoint Historical Fencing League, and Longpoint South, can be found at http://www.fightlongpoint.com/

To add some more community involvement, I'd like to have our listeners record themselves reading the opening and/or closing script to be included in the episode. If you'd like send me a recording of either the opening or closing script, e-mail me at HEMAPodcast@gmail.com with an audio file.
